Documentary Evaluation
Why would someone move to London? The culture London, is full of culture from around the world making the city inviting with art, music, festivals, food and more. This documentary is about the housing crisis currently having in London for anyone who is thinking of moving to the complex, expensive to the city, I will be doing this film from the point of way of young adults or postgraduates. The short documentary will consists of the following pros and cons of living in a over-crowded, fast paste, exciting city. The topics that will present are the environment, people, public transport and all these element will refer back to the main point of the film, housing.
There were problem the first part of the production process since the first drafted story board didn't really provide fact and information because I didn't know what filming technique to use to attract my audience. At this moment I wanted it to feel inviting and not force, forcing people to making a decision but the opposite to have a opened mind on the city.
Someone suggest to do handheld and ask people that have different background and careers so to push the envelope me and my cameraman travel to East London for mainly fresh new opinions and answers after asking interacting with South London residences they all has the same answers and belief towards the questions I was asking. This starting to become boring because it was all the same. East London is where more creative and opinionated character would move to. I don't create any storyboard or structure getting ready to shot because I was the film to feel realist and relatable towards my target audience. I got from my uncle's friend who's currently training to be a cinematographer, so we went to around Brick Lane and Camden and pursue to ask random young adults about there living situation and why come or still living in London when there's more cons then pros.
Editing the footage was difficult knowing that I needed more footage but I jump cuts and music to use as distraction soon learning that I don't when my audience were asking for more. Main focus to be purely on the person I was interviewing, mid shots using demonstrate that I want to feel like they were looking at the whole subject. In fact, this is an approximation of how you would see a person "in the flesh" if you were having a casual conversation. You wouldn't be paying any attention to their lower body, so that part of the picture is unnecessary.
To obtain audience feedback, I used various techniques to gather opinions of what went well with my main production and ancillary tasks, in addition to finding out what I could have done better and what could be improved. I posted the documentary on my youtube channel and send video link to various social media such as Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter inviting the general public to comments on the film. This allowed me to gather feedback from not only my target audience, but from the wider population.
Overall I received positive feedback about my documentary from both ages 15-25 and 26-35. I viewed this as a success in not only the creation of the film but the choice of demographic. But I know that personally don't achieving my goal of answering my question knowing that there was so such more information that audience needed to know and this where I failed to deliver. I could have succeeded if I knew how to manage my time. The aim was to show the public what it takes to live in London for a insider point of view and the film shows the beginner stage of this and there still was more that's needed to be done to achieve this goal.
